Fashion and art continue their well-worn love affair in a special collaboration between two creatives on either sides of the world

As designers of Australian fashion label LIFEwithBIRD, Bridget McCall and Nicholas Van Messner are well aware of the importance of a good cut. So when it came to launching their summer collection, 'Abstraction', they knew just who to approach for a special project - Spanish artist Rocío Montoya. The Madrid-based mixed media artist blends photography with digital collages to create stunning and experimental works that often focus on the personal.

Favouring portraits that err on the surreal side, Montoya was approached by LIFEwithBIRD to create an interpretation of their new collection. Using her collage technique to express the summery vibes of the collection, Montoya describes the collaboration as a "very easy and pleasant experience with [great] creative freedom." And despite being thousands of kilometres apart, thanks to technology (and great communication skills), the process was a completely seamless one. The result - a series of five striking fashion portraits/collages (pictured in the gallery above) - is the perfect ode to the LIFEwithBIRD's summer range.

So how did it happen? To begin the creative process, Montoya used Nick and Bridget's Italian holiday photos as the basis. "LIFEwithBIRD sent their references, which consisted of a summery colour palette, prints of the season and the inspiration for their collection which is based on the colours and landscapes of the Amalfi coast," says Montoya. "From there, I conceptualised and created a set of five artworks based on surrealism from a fresh and transgressive point of view."

The five pieces each play on the stunning scenery of the Italian coastline in their own unique way, while also blending key prints and colours from LIFEwithBIRD's collection. Priced from $175, they're available to purchase online at lifewithbird.com or at the label's Sydney store located at The Strand Arcade.
