The works of remowned fashion photographer Mark Shaw are coming to Sydney's Becker Minty store - see portraits of JFK and Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and Yves Saint Laurent up close
Back in the '50s and '60s, when women were bonda fide movie stars and women still wore gloves and hats out to lunch, Mark Shaw was a celebrity photographer chronicling the lives of famous faces such as John F. Kennedy and then wife Jackie, as well as Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Yves Saint Laurent, Lee Radziwill, Nico of the Velvet Underground and Coco Chanel.
Shaw, who worked at Harper's Bazaar and LIFE magazines, also worked closely with Dior from 1952 to 1962 and became a celebrated fashion photographer during his time, taking a behind-the-scenes look at the world of haute couture and high society. His work has been the subject of a books and is collected privately by the likes of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston and Martha Stewart. So popular is his catalogue, that Potts Point lifestyle store Becker Minty is bringing an exhibition of his most famous photos to Sydney next month.
The Mark Shaw exhibition (kicking off next Thursday, August 4) will offer an intimate glimpse into the work of this legendary photographer, with limited edition prints of his work available to purchase exclusively at Becker Minty. Curated by store owner Jason Minty, this rare exhibition is a must for fashion lovers. "Although most of Mark's images are directed specifically for magazine shoots, there are many that are a little more 'in the moment, often giving us a slightly more behind the scenes or more natural look into the chosen celebrity," says Minty. From portraits of the former First Lady Jackie Kennedy and her sister Lee Radziwill and Coco Chanel sorting buttons while smoking a cigarette, the chosen works offer an unfettered glimpse into some of the 20th century's most stylish icons.
Mark Shaw: In The Moment runs from August 4 until September 30.
