There's one simple trick your eye make-up application is missing: cream shadow primer. Sure, we've mastered the art of prepping and priming the face; but what about our eyelids? I'll let you in on a little make-up artist secret: coloured eye primer is essential. Used alone or underneath eyeshadows to intensify their colour, they make eye make-up stay perfect for longer, enhance eye shades by looking airbrushed on the eye and look far more natural than powder eyeshadow ever could. Whether you want a neutral-hued eye primer or a two-in-one cream shadow, here's my cream of the crop:
1. Giorgio Armani Eye Tints in #4 and #9, $53 each, davidjones.com.au
Armani delivers a gorgeous wash of lightweight colour in very wearable, muted tones. Ultra sheer and with a silk-like feel, the tints promise 16-hours of crease-proof wear. Number #9 is that perfect pearly highlight shade but for something more adventurous, #4 is an incredible jade green.

2. Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon eyeshadow pencil in Amber Haze and Champagne Diamond, $34 each, charlottetilbury.com/au
The love affair for these creamy shadow sticks began when Charlotte Tilbury first launched her brand; after seeing the way the colours shimmer like diamonds (not to mention the way they stay put on the eye) I was sold! They're super long-wearing and they really do pick up the shades in your eye colours as Tilbury promises.

3. Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Colour in BR306 Leather and BR709 Sable, from $28, myer.com.au
The Rolls-Royce of cream shadows, these luxurious colours have a gorgeous suede-like texture. Non-creasing, water-resistant and with a sheer to medium coverage, the shimmer colours are a favourite among celebrity make-up artists. The metallic sheen isn't shiny or glittery so it's very wearable.

The colours are stunning and give the eyelid that lived-in, dewy look after applied. They're also great as a primer for eyeshadow when you want to create a dramatic look.

5. M.A.C Paint Pots in Groundwork and Layin' Low, $35, maccosmetics.com.au
M.A.C's matte coloured creams are a no-brainer as a gorgeous non-creasing eye shade. The colours Groundwork (a nude, coolish light brown) and Layin Low (a fresh peachy shade) give the crease a subtle definition and make your eye colour pop!

6. Maybelline Eye Studio Tattoo in Tough as Taupe and Bad to the Bronze, $9.99 each, chemistwarehouse.com.au
A great budget product that really delivers a long-wearing look. The cream shadow sets quickly on the eye so it works best with a small soft brush, blending in circular movements. The Tough as Taupe colour is a stunning cool tone brown/grey that really accentuates the crease line perfectly.

7. YSL Pop Water Full Metal Eyeshadow in 03 Taupe Drop and Grey Splash, $48 each, mecca.com.au
These stunning shades give an airbrushed shimmer to your lids without looking too heavy metal (contrary to the name). They're buildable but totally wearable for day as well as a great base for a smokey night look. I adore the woody metallic shade (Taupe Drop) and the gunmetal grey for a smokey eye base (Grey Splash).
