From slick single braids to punked-up fishtails, classic French twists to whimsical crowns, it's time to add a braid to your daily routine

Put away your top knot and for heaven's sake, don't touch the tongs - because 2016 will go down in (hairdressing) history as the year of the braid. Don't believe us? A) you should know better by now and B) take the above  photos as proof.

Designers first started bringing back braids late last year at the S/S '16 shows, with knotted, twisted and plaited strands showing up everywhere from Public School to Proenza Schouler, J.W. Anderson to Celine - and when Phoebe Philo gives a hairstyle her tick of approval, we get to work. Fast forward a few months and the braid is back on the runway for A/W '16 (case in point: Hervé Leger's grunge version).

The braid is becoming the off-duty model's hairstyle of choice, actors are swiftly following suit for red carpet and hell, even Kim Kardashian is on board. Anyone awaiting further confirmation clearly hasn't seen Beyonce's fashion-tastic 'Formation' video - tear your eyes away from her Gucci-esque jumpsuit and you'll find a fierce mane of skinny braids.

Above you'll find all the inspiration you need for your own take on the trend - BYO texture spray (we like L'Oréal EverStrong Mineral Salt Texturising Spray) and finishing spray (try Kérastase Laque Couture). The braid wears equally well in the office, beach, gym and bar - and the best bit is, you can take it out the next day for lived-in, textured waves. One style, two good hair days? Sign us up.
