Preventative measures: when should you start using eye cream?
We were as guilty as the next person of assuming that eye creams are for, ahem, more mature skin types. And then one morning, after a night that involved too many vodka sodas and not enough sleep, we woke up with that trifecta of fine lines, puffy skin and bags darker than a jet-black Birkin.
Nothing fast-tracks the ageing process like lack of sleep, stress and alcohol, and we're guessing you get your fill of all three. Since the area under your eyes is almost completely devoid of oil glands, unlike the rest of your face it can't moisturise itself - so it's one of the first places you'll notice those frightening first signs of ageing.
But this is a story with a happy ending - all you need to do is add an eye remedy to your routine for the kind of glowy skin usually reserved for kombucha-swigging, eight-hours-a-night yoga instructors. We're not talking hardcore creams that cost upwards of $200 a pot - save those for when you really need them. Although if you start early enough with one of these beauties, perhaps you never will...
1. Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream, $40, clinique.com.au
They call it the Berocca of beauty and they're not wrong - one swipe of this brand new, lightweight cream and eyes feel and look instantly refreshed. The oil-free formula contains seven peptides (ie collagen-boosters) to plump up the skin while countering dark circles. Pop one in your handbag and reapply throughout the day.
2. Estee Lauder Stress Relief Eye Mask, $65, esteelauder.com.au
Thinking you need some extra help? Enter these hydrating, soothing sheet masks designed especially for the eye area. Infused with aloe vera and cucumber, they're the 10-minute pick-me-up you need after a big night or nightmare day - if you're jetting off somewhere, may we suggest packing some in your carry on.
3. Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand, $58, charlottetilbury.com/au
A nifty two-in-one eye cream and concealer, this is the wand for anyone wanting to minimise the number of products rolling around their make-up bag. One end contains a hydrating eye cream enriched with hyaluronic acid; the other a luminising concealer with light-reflecting particles.
