We've reached that time of year when mates are just returning from their European summer holidays and rocking that enviable combination of tousled and tanned. Okay, so maybe you didn't sink mojitos on Mykonos with Miley, but that's not to say you can't look like you did. Here's what you need.
The hair product
Less is so much more here. The look you're trying to conjure is fresh out of the Aegean, a quick towel dry and off to the bar for a negroni. With a supermodel on the rebound. Okay, let's not get carried away. Point is, the Dear Barber range, available for the first time in Australia, $29.95, has just the product in its Shaping Cream. Scoop out no more than the size of a 20-cent coin, rub well between the hands and apply it from the crown of the head forwards. Then rake your fingers widely spaced back through your hair and you're done.
Beards are still a thing and will continue to be throughout the year. The holiday variety is a little longer and more sun-kissed than its trimmed up corporate counterpart. That said, you want to keep it on the right side of trying-too-hard-barista. The Braun BT5070 Beard Trimmer, $89, features a long-beard comb that finds the perfect middle ground between density and shape. Set it to around 15mm.
With scruff comes the heightened risk of ingrown hairs - which are about as pleasant as Calvin Harris' whining about Tay-Tay. It costs a little more than other varieties, but the Tom Ford For Men Exfoliating Energy Scrub, $75, from David Jones, will nix any ingrowns. It will also cleanse away any debris and set the tone for what comes next.
This is where the look is made or broken. As ever, it's better to have a hint of colour than an overdose of tandoori, so apply a thin smattering of Arbonne Liquid Sunshine Tinted Self Tanner, $44. It goes on with a tint and deepens over a couple of hours. Remember to be careful in covering only the exposed skin and not the beard or temples or it will colour the hair here too.
This is the finishing touch and you'll want it to conjure laidback beach chic. Czech & Speake Cuba, $189, may be inspired by the other side of the world, but its bergamot, lime, peppermint and cedarwood scent couldn't be more south-EU if it were hanging off a Vespa driven by Penelope Cruz.
