Thank the make-up gods for this trend! Now, there's no more sitting in front of the mirror wasting your time painstakingly perfecting your lip liner. No sir - the new way to wear a red lip is here and it's amazingly easy to achieve. It's all about a worn-in look. Think less red carpet and more the morning after - i.e. beautifully stained edges and a powdery, matte finish. Here are my steps to achieving this look for yourself.
Step 1: The first trick to wearing a matte lip is to make sure your lips are prepped. I find the best results are achieved by exfoliating first to create a smooth canvas for the application of your lipstick. I like Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lib Scrub. Using your finger, massage the scrub onto your lips. I like to give it a good 30-60 seconds depending on how dry the lips are. Then remove the excess with a wet wipe.
Step 2: Next, apply a light layer of lip balm. I prefer balms that aren't too sticky and have a matte finish. My preference is NUXE Baume Levres Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm which repairs and smoothes, preparing your lips for the next step.
Step 3: Using your favourite matte red lipstick - my go-to is M.A.C Ruby Woo - apply to the centre of both lips. Don't worry about the edges yet; that's up next.
Step 4: Finally, using a fluffy brush, work the lipstick to the outer edges of your lips. This will create a very soft, worn-in appearance. A classic make-up artist favourite is the M.A.C Cosmetics #217 Brush.
And viola! An easy, 2016 take on the classic red lip.
