Perhaps there's something in the Tassie air, because Australian actress Rachael Taylor has pretty much never had a bad skin day since she broke out in the original Transformers movie in 2007, Aussie accent intact. It was an auspicious start, because the Launceston-born beauty has worked pretty solidly since, racking up film roles in Red Dog and Gold, and balancing them out with appearances in hit TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and Netflix fan favourite Jessica Jones. You always look so fresh faced! What's your beauty philosophy?
I think people can really overcomplicate things with a million different products with expensive price tags, but I prefer to keep things really simple. For me, something inexpensive backed by science is the trick. That's why I'm such a longstanding Neutrogena fan.
Which five beauty products are highest on rotation for you?
1. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cleanser, $15.99 - for the morning before I put on make-up. It contains Hylarounic acid, so my skin feels hydrated throughout the day. I don't feel so guilty lathering all that make-up on with this cleanser.
2. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gelee Milk, $15.99 - in the evening after filming or being out all day, this formula is so lovely to use, everything just wipes right off.
3. Cle De Peau concealer - a longtime fave that Krysten Ritter got me onto!
4. Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray, $39 - a great texturing spray which adds volume to your hair
5. Organic Coconut & Avocado Oil - the most versatile of all products, great for hair, body, removing make up, softening cuticles, you name it!
How do you look after your skin when you're always in camera-heavy make-up?
Lately, I've been using the Neutrogena Gel Cleanser which contains hyaluronic acid - I'm just obsessed with this ingredient, I wish I started using it earlier. It leaves my skin hydrated all day, so my skins not freaking out during the day wearing all that make-up. You have to wash your face at the end of the day! Properly! If I don't, I break out.
Do you have any favourite facialists in LA you can recommend?
Terri Lawton (terrilawton.com), she has such a positive approach to ageing, she is PRO ageing - rare in LA! She has an organic and holistic approach to facials.
How do you maintain a good skincare routine when travelling?
Aside from ensuring I'm cleansing and moisturising I really keep on my water intake and ensure I'm getting enough fruits and vegies into my diet as well!
Are there any Aussie beauty products that you swear by?
I love the Aesop Resurrection Hand Balm - I always carry it with me, especially in NYC, it gets so cold you just want to make sure your mittens are being looked after!
What's the biggest beauty mistake you've ever made?
Not removing all of my make-up at the end of the day! It's only happened a handful of times in my younger years but the importance of cleansing is huge.
What's the biggest thing you miss about Australia?
The ocean, my girlfriends and good coffee! FaceTime makes the world a bit smaller for keeping in touch with my girls and with family. Wish they could FaceTime me a coffee!
Do you have any beauty icons or women you look up to?
True beauty comes from the inside out and I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful women on the planet as family members, girlfriends and work mates. It's a privilege getting to work alongside Krysten every day, she's focused and smart and kind - that is beautiful.
