Make-up artist Sarah Tanno on Lady Gaga, models and Marc Jacobs
It's not every day you get a chance to speak to Lady Gaga's beauty go-to girl, who also happens to be Marc Jacobs Beauty Global Artistry Ambassador. So naturally we had plenty of questions for Sarah Tanno, who seems to be living the make-up artist dream: working and collaborating with one of music's most creative and collaborative chameleons, while also creating stunning looks for Marc Jacobs Beauty.
In fact, a quick scroll through Sarah's Instagram, reveals she's as enthused about her day gig as you would expect, creating Gaga and Stella Maxwell's Halloween looks, or working on Gaga's make-up for American Horror Story: Hotel (a gig which earned her a Creative Arts Emmy and a Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award - nice). Unafraid of bold colour, experimentation and full-throttle make-up, you can see why she's such a match for Gaga's showmanship.
Read on to discover goss about her famous clientele and why she's in love with Marc Jacobs Beauty's newest production addition, Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon...
What are you most excited about in your new role with Marc Jacobs?
I'm most excited about creating and Marc Beauty doesn't hold me back from doing so. They let me be the artist I am and support me through every project with an open mind.
Has Lady Gaga taught you any make-up secrets?
She's taught me so many things. From tricks on bleaching brows and incredible skin care tricks. She's a genius.
Do you have any career highs or milestones you can share?
There are so many moments in my career that have made me cry ('I just can't believe this happened to me' kind of moment.) Some stand-outs would be, winning an Emmy for creating make-up looks for Gaga as the Countess, doing the Superbowl half-time show and becoming part of the Marc Beauty family.
You've worked with a ton of top models - who are some of your favourites?
I am lucky enough to work with not only the most beautiful but the sweeeeetest girls. I love them all! Some of my girls I love to paint are Gigi, Suki, Hailey and Stella.
Who are your all time beauty icons?
I love to study make-up from all eras. In films throughout the ages the subtle changes in brows, liners and lip shapes. It gives me chills the way Jean Harlow would draw her brows, The way Elizabeth Taylor would extend her eyeliner. I love the way Edie Sedgwick made up her eyes. Classic beauties like Veronica Lake and Grace Kelly. I love Jerry Hall, Veruska, and my modern day icon Lady Gaga, who is the ultimate chameleon.
Describe the moment that you knew you wanted to be a make-up artist.
When I was in high school I got really into make-up. I didn't have much confidence then and the way make-up transformed me not only on the outside but how I felt. People at school noticed and would always ask me to do their make-up. I saw what it did for them. How beautiful they felt and I knew if it was a career I wanted it.
If you could do any person's make-up dead or alive who would it be?
I thought long and hard about this. It is such a great question. I honestly have to say I am already doing it. Gaga is a dream client. I can't think of a better partner in any creative situation.
