Life changer: the next-gen LED acne treatment under $100
Acne. Ugh, right? The word itself is enough to elicit shudders of horror. Because if you're anything like us, those pesky breakouts didn't disappear after your teens, they lingered and now turn up in times of stress, during your period and after a late night run in with a few (too many) espresso martinis. We're assuming by now you've probably got an arsenal of acne-fighting products and a facialist or dermat on speed dial, but let's be honest: sometimes those drastic actions can get a little exxy.
That's why we're more than a bit excited about Neutrogena's latest innovation: Visibly Clear™ Light Therapy Acne Mask. An at-home LED treatment that specially targets pimples using red and blue wavelengths to penetrate the skin at the speed of light, we're tipping this as the next-gen of DIY acne eradicators. Designed to be used in the comfort of your home (yep, while you're watching Netflix, Stan or Game of Thrones) for just 10 minutes a day, the mask is perfect for those with mild to moderate acne. Oh, and did we mention it retails for under $70? Yeah.
So how does it work? Like the fancy light treatments you pay for at the salon or dermatologist, Neutrogena's mask uses blue light to kill bacteria and red to reduce inflammation. "LED therapy has been used by dermatologists for many years to treat acne," explains consultant dermatologist Dr Eleni Yiasemides. "It works by gently penetrating the skin and targeting acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflammation." And clinical trials of the Light Therapy mask back this up: after just one week of use, 80% of the subjects tested had fewer breakouts. We reckon that's totally worth the price you pay for looking like a robot/horror movie villain for 10 minutes or so... (sorry, had to go there).
We also got the lowdown from Neutrogena ambassador and model Montana Cox. "It's so easy [to use]," she says. "It only takes 10 minutes and I can travel around with it anywhere, [it's] like I'm taking a dermatologist with me." After confessing she "suffers from breakouts all the time", thanks to her busy lifestyle and make-up heavy shoots, after hearing about the mask Montana was quick to jump on board. "I've only ever done red light facial treatments at skin clinics," she explains. "But with the new Neutrogena mask, now I can do it at home."
And the model has already seen results. "My skin is smoother and definitely less red in patches," she says "And my make-up artist even told me she saw a difference!" While the mask is obvs now a part of her daily routine, when we asked Montana for any other acne-banishing tips, she was quick to share. "I know this is very difficult and easier said than done - but DON'T TOUCH!" she stresses. (Oops.) Thankfully, she has good news. "It's always good to have a healthy diet, but I've been told by a dermatologist that diet doesn't necessarily change acne-prone skin - so that chocolate cake is fine! My other tip is to drink plenty of water and be really mindful of what products you use and to make sure they are safe and effective." We can't argue with that.
Neutrogena Visibly Clear™ Light Therapy Acne Mask will be available at Priceline Pharmacy, Chemist Warehouse and other pharmacies retailers from September 1, 2017. The LED pack with one mask and 30 sessions worth of Activator is $69.99, while the Activator is $29.99. Head to neutrogena.com.au for more info.
