Use fake tan to give you more than a bronzed bod - with a little know-how, the right products offer contouring and body sculpting benefits, too

We've all moved on from streaky tans and muddy faces, but the best way to achieve a natural-looking bronzed bod (the kind that makes people look twice, and in a good way - see the gallery above for inspiration), is a little more involved than a simple spray and go. "Tan trends have moved away from block, super dark, dull tans," says St. Tropez Skin Finishing Expert, Michael Brown. "Now, just like complexion trends, it's all about real, natural and glowing skin."

You've probably heard whispers about tontouring (contouring with self-tanner), but truth is, it's not as scary as it sounds. "A deeper colour, like a tan and/or bronzer, will shade the face and body and set back features, making them appear slimmer," says Brown. "Illuminating, on the other hand, gives light and therefore promotes an area forward. Together you can create a beautiful contoured look." But how? "Shade the larger areas of the face and body and then highlight the areas you want to lift and stand out; this is usually the frontal bones of the face and body," he explains.

The take-home message? Finish off your tanning work with some clever highlighting, and you've got a model-worthy (and photo-friendly) end result. "Adding highlighter to the frontal bones of the body reflects light to give extra reality to a tan," says Brown. Read: a more believable and radiant glow. We asked Brown to share his top three tips for tanning below.

What's the easiest way to get a glow that lasts all summer?
A Gradual Tan is a great way to be prepared and ready to go at all times. Use the St.Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Body Lotion ($33.95) regularly to build a soft, gradual tan. Then when a big event is in the calendar, a self-tan such as the St.Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse ($49.95) can be the lift you need for the ultimate body glow.

If you're after a quick fix, what products are best?
St Tropez's Instant Tan ($19.95) is perfect for an immediate result. It rubs in bronzed and then washes off that day, making it the perfect option for last minute quick fixes.

What's the best way to maintain a tan?
Moisture! Every tan, just like foundation, will last so much longer with moisture in the skin. Daily moisture prep with the St.Tropez Tan Enhancing Moisturiser ($19.95) is key for a longer tan life.
