Customisable skin care could be the answer to your beauty woes
Hop on the bandwagon
If the influx of monogrammed accessories in the market tells us anything, it's that customisation is having a rather big moment. It certainly makes otherwise mundane or functional objects seem that much more personal and unique, so for that fact, we're not complaining. But when you apply this same idea to beauty, it's becomes an even more intriguing concept.
Considering that most of us have arrived at our adult skin regimes via years of egregious product trials and wasted money, it's fair to say we've had to diagnose our skin types first, then find the right products later. Of course, with said trial and error technique, that often leaves us with a bathroom cupboard full of products that aren't quite right for our skin. Or, as Hop & Cotton founder Ee Ting discovered, they might address one problem and exacerbate another. Acne prone, but dry? Dull, but oily T-zone? If this sounds like you, read on.
A sufferer of extremely sensitised skin, the Brisbane-based cosmetic chemist and molecular biologist created her beauty brand out of sheer frustration that she couldn't find what she needed from a single product. Enter, Hop & Cotton (named after the nicknames of Ee Ting and her husband), the Australian brand offers a completely customisable skin care regime. And like so many great beauty brands, it was borne out of one woman's 10-year search for products that didn't exist.
With the mantra "Don't compromise, customise", Hop & Cotton's mission since its 2013 inception has always been straightforward: powerful and easy-to-use products that have been expertly formulated to address unique skin concerns. Using a 10-minute questionnaire to assess each customer's unique skin concerns (be they acne, ageing, dryness or sensitivity, or a combination of these), each product is formulated into a 3-step program, which is then delivered to your door in around five business days - genius much?
Cruelty-free and formulated without sulphates, parabens and artificial colours, most products in the range come formulated without fragrance, which (as any sensitive skin sufferer will tell you) becomes the work of the devil on reactive complexions. Of course, being customisable there's still the option to add fragrance to your moisturiser if you absolutely want it.
Thanks to a tight edit of cleanser, chemical exfoliator and a moisturiser that triple as a serum and eye cream - the Hop & Cotton range is as simple, yet potent. Did we mention you can choose your preferred formula too? From foamy or gel-based cleansers, to anti-ageing/ revitalising or brightening/anti-ageing moisturisers, plus a punchy AHA and BHA-packed chemical exfoliator - the Hop & Cotton range is so tightly edited it would make Marie Kondo proud.
With three body products also in the range (a lanolin-based lip balm, a heavy duty body cream and a lighter, non-greasy one), Ee Ting says she's developing the perfect physical sunscreen formula, too. Of course, being the scientist she is, she won't rest until the zinc oxide formula is perfect. And after having played guinea pig on my own Hop & Cotton range, I can certainly attest that the dedication has paid off.
After just a few weeks of using the products, they've balanced and calmed my oily, acne-prone skin faster than any emergency facial. And while I'm still using eye cream (guilty pleasure), and essence after exfoliation (addicted), it's safe to say my breakouts and usual 3pm blot-the-oil-away episodes have vanished. Turns out, 3-steps of the correct skin acre is enough to change your life.
