In fact, it could be the difference between an okay complexion and a flawless one. Based on the principle that oil attracts oil, these cleansing beauties work to remove surface grit (think make-up, sweat and pollutants you pick up throughout the day) and draw out oil, leaving you with a completely fresh face that feels soft and nourished - with none of that squeaky clean, uncomfortably tight feeling a foaming cleanser can give you. Apply all over to dry skin, emulsify with a little water and rinse off, and you should find that every last trace of your make-up is gone - goodbye, clogged pores and hello, clear skin. Here are three of our favourites.

1. Shu Uemura leads the way with their cult-status cleansing oil, a sworn favourite of make-up artists and celebrities the world over (locally, Montana Cox is a fan). They've just released limited edition illustrated versions of their Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil, $125, and Blanc:Chroma Brightening & Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil, $98, for Chinese New Year, so there's never been a better time to buy.

2. Tom Ford can do no wrong, and this brand new product in their skincare range is no exception. Launching exclusively in David Jones on January 31, the Tom Ford Purifying Cleansing Oil, $110, is a luxurious blend of jasmine flower oil, evening primrose oil, Buriti oil and Tamanu oil infused with botanical extracts.

3. Used on its own or as the first step of a double cleanse routine, Dermalogica's Precleanse, $54, nourishes as it removes surface debris, thanks to olive, apricot and Kukui nut oils. We love the handy Precleanse Wipes, $24, for travelling.
